Alberta has allocated its initial grid allowance
AESO reports that all 1,200 MW of its interim connection allowance has been allocated: 970 MW to P2936 GLDC Load and 230 MW to P3083 Keephills Data Centre Phase I. Both have executed load contracts and continue through the connection process.

BC Hydro · 2026 Call for Demand; eligible AI and storage data centres
B.C. has more requested load than this call offers
BC Hydro reports 15 applications requesting close to 800 MW. Its call offers up to 300 MW for AI and 100 MW for storage data centres; unused storage capacity can transfer to AI. Successful applicants are now expected to be notified at the end of September 2026.
What this means. The request total exceeds this call’s allowance. Selection decides access to the interconnection process; it does not itself deliver firm power.

An Ontario assessment identifies a workable operating condition
IESO’s February 4, 2026 addendum retains the centre’s ultimate load of 80 MW. The 400 MW threshold covers three stations together. Its assessment finds no thermal violations with the proposed mitigation: keep a specified low-voltage tie breaker open when the forecasted combined peak exceeds that threshold.
What this means. The public record identifies both the local network issue and an assessed remedy. The useful watch is compliance with that operating condition and any later revision.

The assessment is not evidence of actual commissioning, an observed outage, a delay, or AI workload. The centre’s 80 MW cannot be divided into 400 MW to infer spare capacity.

AESO’s June 2026 guide calls for detailed models of active and reactive power responses during voltage or frequency disturbances. It also sets out expectations for ramping, power quality and the ability to stay connected through disturbances.
What this means. A megawatt allocation is only one input to connection readiness. Controls, backup transfers and electrical design must satisfy the operator’s technical requirements.

Sturgeon County · Greenlight power plant supplying Meta
Dedicated power adds a generation and fuel delivery chain
Pembina reports a final investment decision for a 932 MW gas-fired plant, with service anticipated in the second half of 2030. It says long-term gas transportation capacity has been secured for approximately 150 million cubic feet per day. Its July 8 disclosure identifies Meta as the customer.
What this means. This is a named project with commercial commitments. Delivery now depends on building and commissioning the plant and its supporting gas infrastructure.

The service date and fuel requirement are project expectations. Dedicated supply is not electricity already available; Greenlight’s fact sheet says the plant will remain connected to the grid.

Cooling design changes the water question
Meta specifies closed-loop liquid cooling with dry heat rejection and no operational cooling-water use. Separately, Greenlight’s August fact sheet estimates average daily plant water use below 750 m³, subject to detailed engineering; steam-system wastewater is part of the design. The county reports available supply including the planned centre and plant.
What this means. The disclosed design addresses a major source of cooling demand. A useful water account still includes the power plant, site services and drought restrictions.

The plant figure is an estimated annual-average daily use, not a peak-day limit, net consumption measurement or an operating result. County allocation figures are not river-wide spare capacity.

Alberta · regional water allocation; not a finding about every project
Water access also depends on the basin and licence
The Alberta government’s published data-centre information identifies the Bow, Oldman and South Saskatchewan basins as closed to new surface-water licences. It describes transfers of existing licences or agreed municipal supply as possible routes for projects there.
What this means. A low-water design and a site with an available water-service route can change feasibility. Province-wide water abundance does not answer the local allocation question.

The associated power plant expects physical emissions
Greenlight estimates approximately 2.6 million tonnes of CO₂e a year if highly utilized. It describes future carbon capture as a possible upgrade. Meta separately plans to add clean energy sufficient to match the centre’s electricity use.
What this means. The disclosed gas-generation emissions and the clean-energy matching plan need separate accounts. Matching alone does not establish an emissions-free physical supply at every hour.

Rocky View County · Kineticor’s September 2025 proposal
A grid allocation did not settle one campus’s land-use case
The county reports that council did not approve Kineticor’s proposed area structure plan on September 9, 2025, chiefly because of the location’s effects on agriculture. It said the proposed development could not proceed without that approval, even though the account records an AESO allocation. A later county statement supported data centres at suitable sites.
What this means. Land-use approval is a separate delivery condition. This case shows an actual decision affecting a named proposal.

The build phase brings a separate local delivery burden
Meta anticipates about 3,000 workers at peak construction and plans roughly C$60 million of local road and water improvements. Greenlight separately anticipates more than 1,000 workers at its construction peak and a traffic-management plan.
What this means. The buildout has identifiable labour, contractor and transport requirements before steady-state operations begin. These are concrete items to track against the construction schedule.

Equipment exposure is real; some contracts are already in place
The IEA’s April 2026 assessment identifies tighter advanced-chip and energy-equipment supply chains, including high-bandwidth memory and transformers. For Greenlight, Pembina reports a fixed-price Siemens turbine agreement and long-term service arrangements.
What this means. The global supply constraint warrants attention, while the disclosed project contract is evidence of progress on one part of it.

Greenlight has financing and construction contracts
Pembina reports arranged project debt for about 60% of Greenlight’s cost, with the remainder to come from equity contributions. It says fixed-price construction and turbine agreements cover about 85% of project cost. Its second-quarter update confirms the final investment decision.
What this means. There is evidence of a financing structure and contracted construction costs. That helps distinguish this power project from an unfinanced proposal.

Power terms affect the project’s economics and flexibility
Hydro-Quebec’s revised August 4 proposal combines a monthly charge of C$32.704 per kW of billing demand with 8.710¢ per kWh, plus a specified excess-demand charge. The tariff docket remained in progress in the September 13 capture. In B.C., higher offered prices or curtailment can improve an application’s evaluation score.
What this means. Price, billing demand and willingness to reduce load are part of the delivery conditions. An energy-only price is insufficient to describe a project’s power cost.

Canada · federal sovereign public supercomputer program
Usable compute also requires chips, networking and acceptance
ISED’s program guide evaluates documented GPU availability, facility readiness and the architecture linking compute, storage, memory and networking. It asks for evidence such as supply agreements or vendor allocations and a phased deployment plan.
What this means. A powered building is a milestone toward usable AI capacity. The program’s own requirements give this watch concrete hardware and integration milestones to follow.

Canada · AI Sovereign Compute Infrastructure Program
Canadian siting and Canadian access are separate conditions
ISED identifies approximately C$890 million for the infrastructure build layer over seven fiscal years from 2026–27. It requires Canadian governance and operational control, alongside a separate service layer that manages user access. Its guide includes control over metadata and access pathways.
What this means. This initiative provides a specific route to Canadian-controlled public compute. A privately owned centre located in Canada does not, by location alone, satisfy the program’s governance and access conditions.

Ontario’s forecast establishes scale, with uncertainty explicit
IESO expects data centres to account for 8.6% of Ontario electricity demand in 2050 in its Reference Scenario, about 60% more than previously forecast. It separates variable growth drivers, including data centres, into a growth margin and publishes high- and low-demand scenarios.
What this means. Data centres are material to long-range system planning. The planner is explicitly treating their growth as uncertain.
